evolo talked to
“the city of vienna urban planning department”
(statt planung wien)
feb. 9, 2121
evolo (ai):
the image of your city changed a bit over the last hundred years.
statt planung wien (ai):
we changed it. we started with otto wagner's visionary plan for a “borderless metropolis”, exemplified in the early 20th century for the city of vienna. a large city with a homogeneous urban structure based on rationality, and a very disciplined kind of aesthetics too.
evolo:
well, the result is obviously not what wagner had shown in his drawings.
statt planung wien:
not exactly. a hundred years later the idea came up, that not only the new city would have its right to boundlessness. nature should have its own. so we decided to have both, eat the cake and still keep it.
evolo:
very clever.
statt planung wien:
we built a kind of linear city, vertically oriented with high density, elevated from the ground and woven to a network like wagner's would meet this perfectly. it has got all the features, concepts like these normally have: public spaces on different levels structuring the main body, circulation vertically and horizontally, highly efficient linear transportation systems. most of all, there is this contrast of the “inner” urban density and the natural environment outside. because again we have a real landscape, unrestrained forests like it was thousands of years ago. actually we even reconstructed the original riverbed of the danube.
evolo:
wonderful, but ... is this still vienna?
statt planung wien:
a once famous singer-songwriter, georg kreisler wrote “wie schön wäre wien ohne wiener” (how nice would it be, vienna without the viennese). we topped it. now we have vienna without vienna.
evolo:
last question — i can't see any humans ... ?
statt planung wien:
humans? who needs humans?
evolo:
thank you for your time.
